A Course Builders Handbook by Anthony Ffooks

A Course Builders Handbook (Including Helpful Hints on Riding the Fences, compiled by Jane Holderness-Roddam) is a comprehensive handbook describing and illustrating the technical aspects of cross country fence construction. Everything is covered, from how to splice a rope (see below) or measure an obstacle, to advice on how to ride triple bars, and notes on safety.

How to Splice a Rope.
How to Splice a Rope
1. Bend double the last 6 inches of the rope.(1)
2. Hold the longer piece of rope between thumb and forefinger.(2)
3. Twist the longer piece of rope with the other hand, using thumb and forefinger, to open the strands.(3)
4. Push the short end of the rope through the open strands and pull through until a small loop is left at the end of the rope.(4)
5. With the single strand upwards hold the rope where it crosses (5) and twist to open the strands below the cross and pass the short end through again, and pull tight. (a), (b), (c).
6. Follow this procedure once again, so that the short rope end has passed through the main rope three times. (6)
7. The splice is then complete. The loop (4) in the end mey still be adjusted to a size that the rope end will fit through snugly.

The book comes in file/loose leaf format, and is the perfect size for taking to any event where reference to these skills may be required.
